A happily married aesthetician is living the small town dream, but when she finds a box in the closet full of women's lingerie, she realizes her soulmate isn't who she thinks he is.
Jayne Doxtater had a fulfilling career in aesthetics, two wonderful children, and a loving marriage with the man she was sure was her true soulmate, Rick. But when she finds a box in the closet of their cozy ranch home that’s full of women’s lingerie, she is stunned. Is he having an affair?
Rick, a handsome and accomplished athlete, at first insists he just enjoys cross-dressing; he even encourages her to “play dress up” with him. However, after some confusing times and too many secrets, the other stiletto drops: Rick is transgender, and begins the process to transition to living openly as a woman. But is their close-knit rural community ready to meet Ricci? And what about Jayne?
This emotional pilgrimage takes us from beautiful British Columbia’s West Kootenay region to Australia, Vancouver, Montana, Whistler, and back again, as Jayne struggles to come to terms with the new parameters of her relationship. Simultaneously navigating unfamiliar experiences and trying to protect those she loves, Jayne starts to lose herself, even as Ricci finds her own way. The Box in the Closet is the true story of a woman suffering her own unusual form of loss; it’s a love story, and a journey through pain and grief to find healing and peace.
