This is the story of a woman named Mary Cush. When the Great Depression came to America, her husband was barely making ends meet. Even then, he suffered from constant illnesses, big and small, and there were many times when he couldn’t even receive that income. The rent was three months behind, and Mary made a living by sewing for other people’s houses and working as a maid. With five children, she was always stressed out by financial issues and constantly worried and anxious. One day, the landlord came to pick up her son and scolded him for stealing something. The boy just cried out of insult. The child was the most honest child. At that moment, Mary couldn’t bear it any longer. The stress that had been building up exploded in an instant. There was no hope for the future. It felt like blood was rushing out of her head. She took her five-year-old youngest daughter into her room and tightly sealed the gaps in the room with paper and cloth. Her daughter asked, “Mom, what are you doing?” “Yeah, the cold wind is coming in here...” Then she turned on the gas stove. She took her child and laid her down on the bed. When the child asked, “You woke up a little while ago and you’re sleeping again,” she said, “It’s okay! Let’s take a nap.” There was a gas leak. As she slowly fell into a deep sleep, smelling the gas, she suddenly heard music. She listened closely and realized that the radio in the kitchen had not been turned off. “Our Savior, who takes our burden of sins, is such a good friend. Let’s cast our worries and concerns on our Lord.” As I listened to the hymn, tears flowed uncontrollably. I thought, ‘I’m doing such a stupid thing. I’m doing such a terrible thing to my child.’ ‘I tried to fight this whole fight by myself. I didn’t think to leave it to the Lord and pray.’ She got up, turned off the gas, opened the door, and rolled up the window. And she cried and prayed all afternoon. After crying and praying for a long time, she was filled with gratitude that she had a kind husband and five healthy, kind children. There were many difficult times after that, but she remembered the time when she turned on the gas, and got up and walked every day. After that, Mary raised all five children well. Now, in her old age, she has thirteen grandchildren, and her family all serve the Lord with great joy. Mary is not the only one. The wilderness is what we must go through as we live our lives. “Wilderness life” means being in a lonely and harsh environment with no one to rely on and no one to help. During this wilderness life, strangely enough, people around me often act like wild beasts. In short, even people close to me are like animals, unable to eat them and are desperate to eat them.
