This is book 2 in the Leopard's Bane series. The end of book 1 (The Poisoned Garden) saw the hero, Peglar, tricked by his half-brother and sister, disowned by his family and exiled from his home city. At this time he has nothing, and the story continues with him protected by Yalka, a poor girl who befriended him in book 1. However, there's a price on his head and he can't stay with her. He leaves to escape his pursuers and to work out how he can return, clear his name and reclaim his inheritance.
